4WD Vehicle Empowers Youth in Critical Fire Prevention Work

  • Local Champion: Rocky Mountain Youth Corps
  • Date Funded: August 6, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $230,000

Taos residents face growing wildfire threats, but local conservation crews and volunteers lack reliable all-terrain vehicles to reach remote mitigation sites where critical fire prevention work occurs. Without proper transportation, youth crews face safety risks and delays—challenges made worse by a decline in federal field support and rising local need.

To address this problem, Rocky Mountain Youth Corps approached LOR with a solution: funding a 4WD vehicle capable of navigating rugged terrain and backcountry areas. With LOR’s support, the new vehicle will allow crews to safely access remote project sites, respond to emergencies, and transport essential tools. It will also expand youth participation in conservation efforts while helping fill the gap left by reduced federal presence during fire season.
