Housing Makes Health Care Accessible for San Luis Valley Patients and Families

Rio Grande Hospital saw a desperate need for short-term housing. They took the solution into their own hands.

Rio Grande Hospital's tiny cottages are lowering transportation and housing barriers for San Luis Valley residents, making it easier for patients and their families to access care.

Rio Grande Hospital is the only hospital in Rio Grande County, providing critical access and trauma care for residents of Monte Vista, Del Norte, and other nearby towns in the San Luis Valley. Though the hospital is a relatively short drive for residents of nearby communities, transportation and housing can be prohibitively expensive for patients receiving treatment and family members who want to be near their loved ones. To address this problem, Rio Grande Hospital built six tiny cottages to provide short-term housing for patients and hospital visitors. LOR’s funding helped the hospital procure all of the furniture and fixtures for the homes. “The cottages have made it easier for patients to have a homelike environment close to the medical facility,” says Jennelle Gallegos, Rio Grande Hospital’s admissions supervisor. Check out the video below to discover how Rio Grande Hospital is making it easier for patients and families in the San Luis Valley to access health care.
