Subsidized E-Waste Recycling Removes a Barrier for Cortez Residents

  • Local Champion: League of Women Voters of Montezuma County
  • Date Funded: May 20, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $10,000

Recycling electronics isn’t an option for many Cortez residents. Without a local processing center, the Montezuma County Landfill has to send electronic waste, or e-waste, to New Mexico for recycling. Residents have to pay fees to cover the costs, and those fees can add up, making recycling e-waste prohibitively expensive. Members of the League of Women Voters of Montezuma County wanted to make it easier for residents to properly dispose of their electronics, so they worked with the City of Cortez and Montezuma County Landfill to come up with a one-day subsidized recycling event. LOR’s funding helped to cover the out-of-state transportation costs for the e-waste that’s collected during the event, as well as educational handouts for residents and posters, ads, and recycling displays to promote the event.

This project was fiscally sponsored by Onward! A Legacy Foundation.
