Student-Led Sustainability Initiative Advances Environmental Education at Taos High School

  • Local Champion: Taos Municipal Schools
  • Date Funded: September 26, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $30,000

Many students at Taos High School have expressed a strong desire for more hands-on sustainability education and greater access to healthy, locally grown food on campus. Building on this enthusiasm, the Sustainable Living Honors Class invited LOR to support their vision for a comprehensive, student-led sustainability initiative. Their ambitious plan includes building a greenhouse, chicken coop, food processing center, and campus-wide recycling systems.

With support from LOR, the Honors Class and the newly formed ECO Club will purchase supplies and equipment to bring these projects to life. Students will grow fresh produce, raise chickens for eggs, process and preserve food for peers in need, and install recycling stations paired with student-led education campaigns. The initiative will also explore innovative waste projects, such as converting glass into gravel for reuse.

Partnering with local organizations like Taos County, Kit Carson Electric Cooperative, and Taos Ski Valley, students will not only create a more sustainable campus but also share their progress at the statewide ECO Summit hosted at Taos High—positioning the school as a leader in youth-driven climate action across New Mexico.
