Fired Up: Students Build an Horno to Learn Questa’s Culinary Traditions

  • Local Champion: A Questa Resident
  • Date Funded: October 16, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $2,500

Culinary traditions have carried on through many generations in Questa, which is evident in the presence of hornos (outdoor adobe ovens) that have been built around town. Questa High School students are particularly interested in learning how to cook in traditional ways, but they don’t have access to an horno on school grounds. To address that problem, a Questa resident worked with the school district to secure funding for students to build an outdoor oven and help the school implement a traditional cooking program. With support from LOR, students purchased adobe bricks and tools to build an horno in October, which they used to prepare food for a local event. Now, in addition to a hands-on learning experience, the horno will be the focal point of the school’s memorial for a student who passed away over the summer.
