Portable Coolers Protect 4-H Kids and Animals in Cortez

  • Local Champion: Montezuma County Extension Office
  • Date Funded: July 22, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $14,400

Cortez sits in the heart of the high desert. So it can get hot. Really hot. The heat is a particular problem for local kids who raise livestock for 4-H. At the 2023 Montezuma County Fair, the sheep barn reached over 114 degrees, an unbearable and unsafe temperature for participants, their animals, and visitors. One staff member with Montezuma County CSU Extension had the idea to purchase portable coolers to protect the growing number of kids and animals participating in 4-H. LOR’s funding helped the extension office purchase three coolers that will be used during the upcoming Montezuma County Fair, as well as other community events at the fairgrounds.
