Mobile Vision Van Brings Eye Care to Taos Students

  • Local Champion: Lion's Club of Taos
  • Date Funded: May 1, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $29,850

Many Taos students face significant barriers to receiving eye care, including a shortage of local optometrists, long appointment wait times, and limited transportation. After screening more than 2,900 students, the Lions Club of Taos identified hundreds of children who needed follow-up eye exams but were unable to access them. To bridge this gap, members of the club came up with a solution and reached out to LOR. Their idea? A mobile vision clinic that brings services directly to schools. LOR’s funding will help the Lions Club of Taos equip a donated van with vision screening tools and other essential supplies. When up and running, an optometrist and technician will use the mobile clinic to provide on-site eye exams and connect students to the club’s existing free eyeglasses program—ensuring more children in Taos can see clearly and thrive in the classroom.
