Microchip Scanners Reunite Lost Pets with Libby Families

  • Local Champion: Lincoln County Animal Shelter
  • Date Funded: May 20, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $1,150

Libby’s Lincoln County Animal Shelter recently reduced the cost of pet microchipping from $185 to $25, making it more accessible for families. But the shelter lacks scanner infrastructure, requiring animal control officers to transport every found animal back to the shelter to check for a chip. Hoping to make pet returns quick and easy, the shelter’s new director reached out to LOR with a solution. LOR’s funding will help the Lincoln County Animal Shelter purchase a public scanner station and two mobile handheld units for animal control officers. The scanners will allow officers to identify chipped animals in the field for same-day returns while giving residents a way to scan found pets before they enter the shelter system.
