Local Training Prop Keeps Lander’s Volunteer Firefighters Ready to Respond

  • Local Champion: Lander Volunteer Firemans Association
  • Date Funded: April 30, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $25,000

In Lander, residents depend on volunteer firefighters who balance full-time jobs with emergency response duties—answering an average of 33 calls per month. To maintain crucial skills, these volunteers currently travel to Riverton for training exercises, which takes them out of service for extended periods and limits how frequently they can practice. After identifying this as a significant challenge, the Lander Volunteer Fire Department chief reached out to LOR for help bringing a solution to life: Install a specialized burn prop at the Lander firehouse, creating a local training facility where firefighters can practice handling different types of structural fires with simulated smoke and heat. With funding for the prop from LOR, this on-site resource not only allows for more frequent and regular training while maintaining emergency response capability, but also benefits neighboring Hudson and Lander Rural fire departments. strengthening regional fire protection through better-trained volunteers who can save more lives and reduce property damage.
