Landerites Track Air Quality With a New Locally Led Initiative

  • Local Champion: Central Wyoming College Foundation
  • Date Funded: November 4, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $25,000

Many Lander residents are concerned about the air quality in town, especially as wildfires have increased in recent years. In the past, there have been some discrepancies between the air quality reports from the EPA, and those reported by locals using handheld devices, raising concerns for residents particularly vulnerable to poor air quality and particulates. Staff and volunteers at Central Wyoming College Alpine Science Institute came up with a solution to address this problem: Launch an air quality community science project that uses of improved air quality monitoring equipment to carry out air quality testing by local project ambassadors, who also promote the project by hosting educational events and activities throughout the community during the year. The group just needed a little help to launch the initiative and reached out to LOR. LOR’s funding will help support a part-time project coordinator as well as marketing and event costs.
