Electric Doors Make a Libby Community Space Accessible

  • Local Champion: VFW Post 1548
  • Date Funded: April 25, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $13,550

Libby’s local Veterans of Foreign Wars post plays an important role in bringing the city’s many former military service members together. Located in the heart of Libby, VFW Post 1548 holds events and services for veterans, while also serving as a gathering space for the broader Libby community. In the last six months alone, the post has hosted nearly 50 community events and more than 3,600 residents. Yet, despite its importance to the Libby community, the VFW building is largely inaccessible to those with disabilities. The building’s heavy doors make it nearly impossible for Libby residents with disabilities to visit without assistance; if a veteran were to come to an event alone in a wheelchair, they would be unable to access the building at all. One member of Libby’s local VFW had an idea for a solution: electric doors. LOR’s funding supported the purchase and installation of three electric doors, giving all Libby residents the opportunity to participate at the VFW.

This project was fiscally sponsored by Kootenai Country Montana.
