Anniversary Celebrations Rekindle Cortez’s History and Heritage

  • Local Champion: Montezuma County Historical Society
  • Date Funded: April 8, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $9,867

In 2026, Cortez will mark its 140th anniversary. Staff with the city of Cortez and Montezuma County Historical Society thought the milestone would provide a unique opportunity to celebrate local history and heritage, so they reached out to LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help the city and historical society develop and place anniversary banners, historic property plaques, a traveling exhibit, and walking tour brochures throughout downtown. The materials will make local history more visible while encouraging residents to visit local businesses and reconnect with Cortez’s heritage.
