A Sustainable Garden Helps Lander Students Grow Their Own Food

  • Local Champion: Fremont County School District #1
  • Date Funded: April 10, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $5,600

Lander children have few opportunities to learn about gardening, growing their own produce, and preparing their own meals. To help address this problem, an elementary school teacher who runs the Lights On in Lander after-school and summer program hoped to incorporate volunteer-run gardening classes into this year’s activities. To get seeds in the ground, though, the program would need a little help—which is where LOR came in. With the foundation’s help, the school district was able to purchase construction material for garden beds, compost, weed barriers, fencing materials, and irrigation materials. As kids grow produce throughout the summer, they’ll also have the opportunity to take cooking classes and support the local food movement in Fremont County.
