A Radio Tower Improves Emergency Communication in Libby

  • Local Champion: City of Libby
  • Date Funded: January 23, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $6,448

Surrounded by mountains, Libby’s unique geography makes communication challenging, especially during emergencies. The problem came to a head during a recent 17-hour power outage when city staff couldn’t communicate because phones were down and radio signals couldn’t reach across town. When City of Libby staff realized how this communication gap would threaten public safety during an emergency, they reached out to LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help the city install a radio tower at its water treatment plant—the highest point in town—ensuring essential personnel can communicate during emergencies and daily operations, even when the power is out.
