A New Griddle Helps A Historic Cookhouse Keep Serving Community Celebrations

  • Local Champion: Heritage Museum
  • Date Funded: August 23, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $2,985

The Sylvanite Cook Shack was brought down to Libby to preserve the last standing building from the town of Sylvanite, a former mining town in Lincoln County. The cookhouse is in constant use at the Libby Heritage Museum as a community meeting center for weddings, class reunions and special events the museum hosts throughout the year as fundraisers. The cookhouse’s 1964 stove/griddle is used for most events, but its heating plates have begun to fail and it is no longer safe to use it. Given the age of the unit, replacement parts are no longer available leaving the museum with no way to cook food for the many community gatherings. So staff reached out to LOR for help. LOR’s funding will help purchase a new griddle top, allowing the celebrations to continue in this historic dwelling.
