A Heated Building Protects Questa Wildfire Equipment

  • Local Champion: Latir Fire Department
  • Date Funded: February 27, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $23,510

As wildfires become more common around Questa due to drought conditions and the surrounding national forest, residents rely on the Latir Fire Department—the largest volunteer fire department in northern New Mexico—for protection. However, without adequate storage, the department’s specialized wildland firefighting equipment is at risk of freezing and becoming damaged during cold winter months. Members of the Latir Fire Department recognized this threat to the department’s readiness, so they came up with a solution and reached out to LOR. LOR’s funding will help the Latir Fire Department purchase and build a steel building with a heater, ensuring the department’s tanker trucks and UTVs remain operational at a moment’s notice.
