A Farm Stand Teaches Cortez Students Real-World Skills

Cortez middle school students have few opportunities to apply the entrepreneurship skills they learn in the classroom, limiting their exposure to real-world problem solving. One teacher wanted to help students put their skills into practice, so he came up with an idea. LOR’s funding helped the Montezuma School to Farm Project and Montezuma Cortez Middle School purchase produce coolers, a customized popup tent, folding tables, wagons, compostable bags, wooden crates, a banner, and labeling and display supplies to launch a student-run farm stand. Students will learn marketing, budgeting, pricing, and customer service, growing produce in the school garden and selling it at the Cortez Farmers Market. Revenue generated by the stand will go toward funding future classes, creating a self-sustaining cycle that expands opportunities for students.
