Safety Upgrades Make Lander a Premier Destination for Track Meets

In Lander, track and field meets bring hundreds of competitors and spectators to town during the slow spring season before summer tourism begins, but safety issues with the discus throwing area threaten this economic driver. The concrete throwing rings are dangerously slick and can cause athletes to slip and fall. When a parent volunteer noticed these safety concerns during a meet, she reached out to LOR with a plan to upgrade the discus facilities. Working with the school district, which is contributing over $14,000 for new safety nets, she proposed installing properly textured concrete rings that provide adequate traction and drainage. This comprehensive upgrade will not only protect athletes, officials, and spectators but also position Lander to host larger regional meets and attract elite competitors—including the local athlete currently ranked top 10 nationally in discus. LOR’s funding will help install the concrete throwing rings, ensuring Lander remains a sought-after venue that supports local businesses during a crucial economic period.
