Royal Court Float Preserves Cultural Traditions in Taos

  • Local Champion: Taos Fiesta Council, Inc.
  • Date Funded: August 7, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $3,200

The Taos Fiestas is one of Taos’ longest-standing cultural traditions. For nearly a century, the event has included the crowing of a royal court comprised of young women (ages 16-19) from the community who serve as role models and cultural ambassadors at Fiestas across New Mexico and other local celebrations throughout the year.

Interest in continuing this tradition remains very high among Taos youth, but the town no longer had a float to safely transport and spotlight the court during the Fiestas or other local parades. So, a Taos Fiesta Council member approached LOR with an idea: replace the unsafe, 20-year-old float with a new platform to transport the Court in Taos and at events across the state.

Local contractors and volunteers have committed over 40 hours of volunteer labor to construct the new float, and LOR’s funding will cover the cost of the materials needed to bring it to life and support this beloved tradition for years to come. ¡Que viva La Reina!
