Open Gym Nights Give Monte Vista Kids a Safe Place to Play

  • Local Champion: Monte Vista Valley Church of the Nazarene
  • Date Funded: March 24, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $16,210

Middle and high school students in Monte Vista need opportunities for free after-school activities, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic which shut down weekly open gym nights at Monte Vista Valley Church of the Nazarene. Previously, the open gym nights brought in nearly 100 kids each week, and it’s estimated about 400 kids took advantage of the opportunity over the course of a year. Since the open gym nights ended, teachers and other town officials have seen more kids getting into trouble, and they wanted to relaunch this year. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the equipment they needed. With LOR’s help, the church was able to purchase new basketball hoops, gaming equipment, an air hockey table, and other items that will help restore open gym nights and give kids a safe place to spend time.
