Expert Restoration Brings Lander’s Community Steinway Back to Concert Quality

In Lander, a 1974 Steinway Model D piano—worth approximately $230,000 new—serves as a shared community asset at the high school’s Performing Arts Center; it’s used by students, local musicians, and visiting performers. While functional for basic recitals and classes, the piano hasn’t been properly regulated or voiced in years, leaving it unable to support high-level performances where consistent tone and key intensity are crucial. When the new director of Lander Performing Arts recognized that this valuable instrument was falling into disrepair, she reached out to LOR with an idea for implementing a comprehensive maintenance plan to ensure the piano can be used for concert-quality performances . She also came up with a shared maintenance agreement between Lander Performing Arts and the school district to preserve this community treasure for years to come. LOR’s funding will help hire a certified Steinway technician to replace worn hammers and related components, then regulate and voice the entire instrument, ensuring Lander residents can enjoy performances by local and visiting virtuosos for years to come.
