Community Garden Enables Free Access To Healthy Meals for Taos Locals in Need

  • Local Champion: A Taos Local
  • Date Funded: December 18, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $2,600

Taos locals experiencing homelessness have very little access to fresh, healthy food that could support their mental and physical well-being. So, a local Taos business owner reached out with an idea: build a community garden adjacent to the coffee house she operates in an area with a high transient population. Produce from this garden will be used to prepare free hot meals available to food-insecure individuals visiting the coffee house. And individuals expressing interest in the garden will be invited to build skills and community through participation in planting, maintenance, and/or harvesting (although this will not be a requirement to receive food).

LOR’s support helped fund the materials to construct the raised beds and harvest station, as well as the seeds and starter plants needed to kick off the garden’s first growing season.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Downtown Taos.
