Asset Mapping Informs Cultural Preservation and Planning in Taos

  • Local Champion: Taos County
  • Date Funded: June 28, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $27,950

The recent influx of new residents in Taos has raised significant concerns about cultural and historic preservation among community members who have lived in the town for generations. Long-time residents fear the rapid development needed to accommodate newcomers will result in irreversible erosion of the area’s unique heritage. So, Taos County’s Economic Development Director contacted LOR with an idea: Launch a Cultural Asset Mapping project that helps identify and collect information about the community’s cultural resources. The information gathered during the mapping process—from long-time residents and local subject matter experts—can then be used to inform culturally responsive economic and infrastructure plans at the county level and beyond.

LOR’s support will cover the cost of contracting consultants, compensating an advisory group of long-time Taos residents, and funding the necessary material costs associated with the project.
