A Shade Structure Transforms an Underutilized Playground for Families

  • Local Champion: Monte Vista Schools
  • Date Funded: June 7, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $8,718

The playground at Bill Metz Elementary School provides one of the few options for free, year-round outdoor activities for families in Monte Vista. Its central location makes it easy to access on foot from many of the nearby neighborhoods. The only problem is that the playground lacks cover for shade, presenting a challenge not only for students during the school year, but also for families who visit the playground in the summer. Given the lack of shade—as well as a lack of trash receptacles, which can lead to littering—the playground is underutilized. The local parent-teacher organization reached out to LOR with a plan to provide a more attractive option for families by installing protection from sun and inclement weather conditions, seating for children and adults, and trash receptacles. They just needed a little help with the cost of the equipment. LOR’s funding will support the purchase of a 10-foot-by-22-foot structure with a metal roof, a metal bench, and trash bins.
