A New Low Ropes Course Provides Free Team Building Resource for Lander

  • Local Champion: Central Wyoming College Foundation
  • Date Funded: May 1, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $3,100

In Lander, residents lack access to easy, free options for building and practicing teamwork skills. Years ago, a low ropes course at Alpine Science Institute sat mostly unused and eventually deteriorated, requiring removal to make room for the outdoor classrooms and trails that now serve the revitalized, well-loved community space. When a community volunteer planning annual summer camps through Central Wyoming College recognized this gap, she reached out to LOR with an idea to build at least one low ropes element as a community team building asset. The Whale Watch—a low ropes structure designed for group teamwork exercises—will be used by CWC students across multiple disciplines, youth camps on ASI property, and any team or group seeking to develop collaboration skills. The high school already brings incoming freshmen to ASI for orientation where they mountain bike, hike, and climb, making this an excellent addition to existing programming. A weather-resistant metal sign with a QR code will be mounted on a repurposed wooden post, linking to digital instructions for exercises and safety protocols. If successful, the champion hopes to add more elements over time. LOR’s funding will help purchase lumber and materials, create the instructional sign, and cover labor to build and install the Whale Watch.
