While some events are held on downtown Libby’s Mineral Avenue, the town’s main shopping district still has several empty buildings and storefronts, leading to fewer locals and visitors stopping in the downtown area. A local art teacher had an idea for addressing this and proposed the solution to the city: Why not create an engaging art space in Libby’s pocket park to encourage residents and motorists to stop and spend time in the shopping district? Libby already has a strong legacy of public art thanks to the efforts of longtime art teacher Todd Berget, and this particular mural would be created by students at the Libby Central School, Libby’s alternative school, where Berget taught up until a few years before his death. LOR’s funding will support painting supplies to bring the mural to life, as well as the cost of contractor services to remove some infrastructure before work can begin.
