A Bike Check-Out Program in Lander Improves Access to Cycling

  • Local Champion: Project Carpe Diem
  • Date Funded: September 27, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $1,000

Many low-income Lander youth lack access to cycling because they either can’t afford bikes, or have concerns about theft in town. Additionally, many youth who live outside of town would love to be able to ride around central Lander but transporting their bikes into town can be a barrier. Recognizing this gap, a local resident worked with the Lander Cycling Club to come up with a creative solution: Launch a bike check-out program at the Learning Resources Library that’s available to the whole community. The program would make four to six bikes available to anyone—but especially kids—to borrow for rides around town. Housed at the Learning Resources Library, the program would make bikes available in a neighborhood that’s near the paved river walk, an easy and fun place for residents to ride. LOR’s funding will help pay for regular tune-ups and miscellaneous supplies, like helmets, flags, and bells to help launch the program.
