Renovated Greenhouse Gives Taos Students a Space to Learn and Grow

  • Local Champion: The Friends of TISA
  • Date Funded: June 3, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $7,670

For years, the greenhouse dome at Taos Integrated School of the Arts (TISA) was used to store random equipment rather than for its intended purpose as a year-round gardening classroom. The problem was that the school lacked the materials (and funding) necessary to activate the space for hands-on learning, which meant students were losing out on a valuable opportunity to connect with nature, grow food, and learn science. So, two teachers at the school reached out to LOR with a solution: revitalize the greenhouse dome by constructing raised beds and a classroom area with work tables, a whiteboard, and adequate storage for tools and supplies.

With LOR’s support, TISA staff will transform the dome into an ADA-compliment living classroom where children can gain a holistic understanding of growing nutritious food for themselves and the community.
