Pet Pantry Helps Lander Residents Keep Their Animals During Financial Hardship

  • Local Champion: Lander Pet Connection Awarded
  • Date Funded: December 3, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $15,700

In Lander, rising costs are forcing residents to make heartbreaking choices about their pets, with many reaching out to see if the Pet Connection has food to help them get through until payday, while others surrender their animals simply because they can’t afford to feed them. At the same time, animal lovers have been donating pet food and supplies, but the Pet Connection lacks adequate storage and an organized system to distribute these items effectively. When the director noticed this organic community response to a growing problem, she reached out to LOR with a plan to formalize the effort through a dedicated Pet Pantry. A weatherproofed, insulated 40-foot storage container will be divided into two sections: organized storage with shelving for donated food, bedding, leashes, and other essentials, plus a separate receiving area where staff can meet residents picking up or dropping off items. This system protects donations from pests and extreme temperatures while keeping the public out of storage areas, creating an efficient process that serves both donors and recipients. LOR’s funding will help purchase the container, shelving, insulation, electrical lighting, and signage, reducing shelter surrenders while helping pet owners maintain their beloved companions during tough times.
