Investment in Music Education Creates Transformational Opportunities for Taos Youth

  • Local Champion: Taos Municipal Schools
  • Date Funded: June 24, 2024

Research shows that music training boosts IQ, focus, and persistence. In fact, studies have found that learning to play an instrument can have more than twice the impact of sports, theater, or dance when it comes to childhood development. However, despite significant student interest, the financial burdens associated with participating in music-focused electives meant that children in Taos were missing out on these proven benefits.

Historically, students were required to provide their own instruments to enroll in classes like band or mariachi. This prerequisite represented a financial investment many families could not make, especially if their child was a beginner who was unsure about a long-term commitment. When staff members at Taos Middle School reached out with a solution, only seven students were enrolled in the band.

To ensure all students could receive a music education, the Taos Middle School employees proposed that the school purchase over 55 instruments and accompanying instruction books. These resources (funded by LOR) will enable the school to launch a new initiative in which every sixth-grade student is enrolled in either band, mariachi, guitar I, or chorus—providing them with a valuable opportunity to nurture their creativity and improve their long-term success.
