While great wealth and great poverty both exist in Taos, the community is rich in imagination, resilience, and collaboration.

Taoseños have led more than 440 community projects since 2020, ranging from a pilot program to install home battery backup systems for medically vulnerable residents to a livestock lending initiative to help restore soils and conserve water. And locals here are as passionate about creating opportunities for the next generation as they are about protecting Taos’ storied history and culture: Local organizations often collaborate to create new career training programs for young people, and the county recently commissioned a cultural asset map to ensure the tides of modern history don’t erase the legacy upon which Taos was built. LOR community officer Sonya Struck was born and raised in Taos and serves as a community lynchpin, regularly connecting locals from all backgrounds with key resources and each other.
