The San Luis Valley's rich agricultural and cultural history intersect in Monte Vista.

With a colorful tapestry of alfalfa, barley, and potato fields just beyond city limits, Monte Vista wears its agricultural history on its sleeve—but it wears its artistic heart on its streets: Between the beautifully decorated crane statues lining downtown and a full calendar of community parades and festivals, Monte Vista’s rich and varied cultural assets are clear. So is its commitment to making Monte even better than it already is. Since 2022, locals have led more than 240 projects with support from LOR. Initiatives that support local youth are a clear priority for this hardworking town, with locals leading projects that support everything from youth sports to speciality medical services. Underpinning many of those 240 projects is a commitment to building community—whether that’s with CPR classes for caregivers in Spanish or transforming a historic church into a community art space. In fact, in a recent survey, nearly half of Monte Vista’s residents said they would like to be more involved in their community, and 73% had ideas for how to make a positive impact. Longtime local Ivette Atencio, LOR’s community officer, is committed to helping turn those ideas into reality.
