LOR Foundation Sponsors the StoryCorps Great Thanksgiving Listen
Young people across the Intermountain West are invited to interview elders over the holiday
JACKSON, WY – The LOR Foundation is a proud sponsor of the Great Thanksgiving Listen, a program that encourages young people to record an interview with an elder over Thanksgiving and during the holiday season. The Great Thanksgiving Listen is a project of StoryCorps, an organization dedicated to recording, sharing and preserving stories of Americans from all walks of life.
The Great Thanksgiving Listen offers young people a chance to discover the history in their own communities, families and lives by interviewing their grandparents and elders. LOR is working with teachers, partners and grantees to encourage students in the Intermountain West to participate. Participation is encouraged throughout the entire holiday season. “The LOR Foundation is thrilled to support the Great Thanksgiving Listen because we are passionate about creating opportunities for rural communities to tell their stories,” said LaMonte Guillory, communications director at the LOR Foundation. “By raising the voices of small towns in Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, and Wyoming, we can help chronicle what makes the Intermountain West a special place to live.”
StoryCorps provides a powerful platform for people to listen, share and record stories. Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 60,000 interviews from more than 100,000 participants from across the country. It is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind.
The new StoryCorps app enables anyone, anywhere to record conversations with another person for archiving in the American Folklife Center at the U.S. Library of Congress and on the StoryCorps website. StoryCorps also shares edited excerpts of these stories with the world through popular weekly NPR broadcasts, animated shorts and bestselling books.
