Summit County, Colorado

Wildfires in the West are becoming more extensive and severe, threatening communities and the environment. With more development taking place in areas prone to wildfires, communities are looking for solutions to protect homes and infrastructure in the wildland-urban interface.

Headwaters Economics is an independent, nonprofit research group whose mission is to improve community development and land management decisions in the West. With funding from the LOR Foundation, Headwaters Economics has conducted groundbreaking research on how communities in the Intermountain West can reduce the risk from wildfires.

In Summit County, Colorado, researchers from Headwaters Economics worked with policymakers, planning staff, and other stakeholders to integrate wildfire risk reduction into the county’s planning process. Not only did the project directly help Summit County, but Headwaters Economics developed recommendations for other communities and federal policymakers to implement planning measures to reduce risk of wildfires.
